As the kick and bassline dominate the lower frequency spectrum, sidechaining gives your kick room to breathe by temporarily lowering your bass’s volume. Most commonly used for the kick and bass, the sidechaining technique is used to lower the volume of the bass every time a kick drum hits. In other words: apply sidechain to your sound, choose another it should react to, and the volume lowers when your desired sound plays. Sidechaining is a compression technique to make your sound “duck” the output signal of another channel. While it's mostly used to make your kick pop in your track, it's often used on other instruments and effects as well, for both rhythmic and creative purposes. You have most likely encountered sidechaining while listening to your favorite music. But how do you sidechain in Ableton, and what exactly is sidechaining? An Output Trim Fader to the left gives you another gain stage at the end of the Vocal Rider’s signal chain.Sidechaining is a prevalent technique responsible for the ducking basslines and sounds you hear in your favorite house, techno, and – tracks in pretty much every genre out there. The combination of Target slider and Range sliders is what allows you to really dial in gain riding that only cuts loud transients, or only boost quiet passages, or just levels everything. The small arrow between them is known as the Idle Position, which takes its setting from the Target slider. These restrict the Riding Fader’s motion and therefore the amount of level boost or cut. But before we get to these we need to figure out how to select a volume range in which to ride that fader. That gives a total range of 24 dB for riding, and that can be further restricted by use of the two Range pointers to the left of the Rider Fader. If the VO level goes down, Vocal Rider brings it up, and vice-versa. Next, you set a target level range for the voiceover, and Vocal Rider analyzes level of the voiceover track as you mix.
